AI Video Camera Movement Prompts: Examples and Common Mistakes
Compare pan, truck, tracking, dolly, zoom, and locked-camera prompts. Use original examples and diagnose unwanted movement without assuming a guarantee.
Choose what the camera should do
AI video camera movement prompts describe a viewpoint changing over time. Choose the move for the job: a push-in for a portrait reveal, a sideways track to follow a subject, or a locked shot behind a title. Then describe what the subject does within that view.
Use one main move for your first draft, with a direction and a visible endpoint. “Move closer until the cup fills the frame” is easier to evaluate than “dynamic cinematic camera.” The reference below uses standard camera terms covered in Runway's camera guide, which illustrates them with Gen-4.5 outputs.

Use the examples as directions, then judge the actual path and framing in your result.
Pan, truck, and tracking are different instructions
Pan changes the camera's direction while its position stays fixed. Truck changes its sideways position. Tracking explains its relationship to a moving subject. A camera can truck right while tracking a subject moving in the same direction.
Suppose you want to follow the paper boat. “Pan right” allows the boat to change distance from the camera. “Travel beside the boat at the same pace” asks to maintain that relationship. Add “keep the boat near the center” if that composition matters.
When reviewing the result, look at both the subject and the background. Did the boat move through the scene, or did the model move the whole image? Did the camera catch up, fall behind, or follow? For a portrait or campaign shot, also check that the face or product stays where the layout needs it.
A portrait with most of the motion in the scene
For a fashion-style hero, you may want a poised subject with movement around them. Our archived Crimson Veil draft asked for the woman to remain almost still while a silk loop supplied the main motion. Across the sampled frames, her pose and gaze change slightly while the large burgundy loop changes orientation.
Watch the subject, the loop, and the background separately. If you want a similar balance, give the subject a small action and the fabric its own movement, then specify the camera independently. A scene with moving cloth can feel active without asking the character to walk or the camera to circle them.
Example details

For a moving subject, also inspect the frame edges. Our horse tracking example loses most of the horse by 5.8 seconds despite a full-body framing request.
Dolly and zoom should not be used interchangeably
A dolly changes camera position; a zoom changes focal length. Their framing can both become tighter, but their perspective effects differ. Google's Veo prompt guide distinguishes dolly movement from zoom and also documents the combined dolly-zoom effect.
For a simple push toward the cup, start with “the camera moves toward the cup.” For a fixed-position zoom, state that the camera stays in place while the frame tightens. To check the difference, watch how foreground and background objects change relative to one another.
A “dolly zoom” intentionally combines opposite dolly and zoom directions to change the background perspective while keeping the subject roughly the same size.
Why a locked camera can still move
A “locked camera” prompt can still produce unwanted movement. Runway's image-to-video guidance explicitly says its prompting approaches may not produce a perfectly still shot.
The problem also appears in a Reddit discussion about Gen-3 Alpha. Some commenters reported success with static framing language; another reported slight movement in all ten attempts. Those mixed reports concern an older model and are useful as troubleshooting context.
If your result reframes unexpectedly, make a focused comparison:
- Identify two background landmarks, such as the doorway corners. Note whether both slide or grow during playback.
- Check the draft for another camera request, including “handheld,” “orbit,” or “push.” Remove it if the shot should stay fixed.
- State the motion that should happen inside the frame: the boat drifts while the camera stays beside the puddle.

- Compare the new result with the original. If exact framing remains essential and the result still moves, consider a conventional still-image animation or an editing workflow with explicit position controls.
Review direction, framing, and shape separately
A clip can follow the requested camera path while changing the subject's shape. Keep those judgments separate. For a pull-back, check the revealed scene; for a track, check whether the subject remains in view; for a locked shot, check the background landmarks.
